Gordon District Cricket Club
New South Wales
The Gordon District Cricket Club (GDCC) in NSW were fundraising for new training nets and site screens at the main oval: Beauchamp Park.
GDCC is one of the oldest cricket clubs in Sydney and have been competing in the premier grade competition since 1905. GDCG is home to a number of women, men and junior teams.
The club needed to replace the training nets and site screens at Beauchamp park as the original ones were almost 20 years old and difficult to manage. The new equipment was of benefit to all the men, women and junior teams and ensured that GDCC remained one of the best clubs in Sydney with top facilities. The club needed to raise $15k to achieve their goal, they raised $4K through tax-deductible donations and were able to achieve the rest through grants and with Cricket NSW.
The facility development project was a major fundraiser for the club, therefore, there was a high level of involvement at the board level in targeting potential donors. The most successful strategy was reaching out to potential donors and explaining to them the benefit of donating through the Sports Foundation. Donors were thanked through a personal letter, however, the club found that most donors are not after public recognition they are just happy to make a donation to the club they are associated with.
Learnings and Advice
Gordon Cricket Club found that using the Sports Foundation as well as some traditional fundraising like their annual golf day and charity dinner helped to reach their fundraising target. The option of tax-deductible donations was a great benefit for getting potential donors.
